World Oceans Day is observed on June 8 each year, with the aim of celebrating the world’s shared ocean, raising awareness on the crucial role the ocean plays in people’s lives, as well as the important ways people can help protect it. This year’s occasion features the theme ‘Revitalisation: Collective Action for the Ocean’ as well as the first hybrid celebration of the annual event, hosted in-person at the UN Headquarters in New York and broadcast live. The climate crisis is very much an ocean crisis, Public Affairs Officer at the United States (US) Embassy in Brunei Darussalam Jeffrey Barrus said. The US is committed to championing ambitious global targets for ocean conservation, including conserving or protecting at least 30 per cent of the global ocean by 2030, he said. In conjunction with World Book Day, Green Brunei is collaborating with Bruneians:Read to organise a Book Fundraising Campaign which will be held throughout the month of March, from 4th March 2022 until 30th March 2022.  The campaign will be raising money through the selling of the books and sticker packs. 100 percent of proceeds will be donated to Lucky Calico, an organisation that promotes the safety of stray animals and as well as sharing knowledge regarding animal care. The funds will help in ensuring the welfare of stray animals.  The objectives of this book donation are to encourage the public to read, whilst to educate the public on mitigating the issue of strays. A virtual forum titled Life As A Vegan organised by Green Brunei was held on Sunday afternoon, 27th February 2022, with more than 50 participants via Zoom.  The talk involved various speakers with different backgrounds discussing their views on veganism in Brunei Darussalam, Nur Adriana Fathiah Mohd Al-Fatah, Siddharthan Pari, and Siti Zubaidah Haji Nor Hisham, shared their journey, thoughts, and experiences in going vegan and helping the event come together as a success. Education plays a crucial role in tackling climate change issues, Ambassador-Designate of Japan to Brunei Darussalam Maeda Toru highlighted in his speech at the closing ceremony of the Environmental Education Tour Project (EETP) yesterday.
