‘Be proactive in tackling climate change issues’

ENVIRONMENTAL non-government organisation Green Brunei said more action is needed by the community in taking on their own initiatives in tackling climate change issues. Its Co-Founder/ Community Engagement Director Khairunnisa Ash’ari said the government or NGOs should not be the only party working on combatting climate change, but that there should be a collective effort from the community as well. “We have to work together as a community, such as reducing demand for products that have led to the haze issues or reducing usage of cars on the road,” she said. Kakitangan SCB bersihkan Kampong Ayer

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 8 Sept – Sekumpulan lebih 20 orang kakitangan Bank Standard Chartered (SCB) telah bergotong-royong membersihkan kawasan Kampong Ayer, berdekatan Kampung Sungai Besar pagi tadi. Aktiviti kesukarelawanan berkenaan dianjurkan oleh jawatankuasa Kelab Rekreasi SCB dan diketuai oleh Pengerusi Kelab, Awang Muhammad Red Abdullah Ong. Menurut kenyataan SCB, aktiviti berkenaan turut melibatkan kerja-sama Green Brunei yang mana sukarelawan-sukarelawannya turut menyertai aktiviti pembersihan berkenaan yang mengambil masa lebih dua jam. A GROUP of more than 20 staff from Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) recently volunteered their time to clean areas of Kampong Ayer near Kampong Sungai Besar. The volunteering initiative was spearheaded by Standard Chartered’s Recreation Club committee and led by the club’s chairperson, Muhammad Red bin Abdullah Ong in collaboration with Green Brunei whose volunteers also participated in the activity. The volunteers started out from the jetty at the Waterfront in the capital at 7am and made their way via boat. The cleaning activity lasted over two hours. Lessons on mother nature at Temburong Camp

TEN students from Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Secondary School (YSHHBSS) recently had an adventurous time in Temburong while gaining a better understanding of climate change and its impact at a camp. The trip to the Climate Camp organised by eco-based non-governmental organisation Green Brunei at the Sumbiling Eco Village was part of the school’s August ACE (To Achieve To Challenge To Excel) Enrichment Programme. BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – Seminar belia mengenai Nadi Borneo yang berlangsung selama tiga hari, telah berakhir dengan pengumpulan idea dan juga penyerahan sijil penyertaan yang berlangsung di Galeri Seni dan Kebudayaan Kampong Ayer. Seramai 29 belia telah menyertai seminar itu terdiri daripada belia dari Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia dan juga Malaysia. THE three-day youth seminar on the Heart of Borneo (HOB) concluded recently with a project pitching and certificate presentation at the Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery. Twenty-nine youth participants from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesian and Malaysia took part in the event which aims to increase understanding of the Heart of Borneo Initiative and empower them to be the next-generation leaders in promoting sustainable development, a press release said. PARTICIPANTS of the Heart of Borneo (Hob) Youth Seminar explored the Tropical Biodiversity Centre in Sungai Liang yesterday. Comprising youth from Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia, the seminar is a three-day event where participants promote sustainable development through their own ideas. The visit to the centre was part of their itinerary on the second day. The group went on a 30-minute forest trek behind the centre led by its staff, Mohd Yusop Abdul Rahman. Throughout the trek, Mohd Yusop showed the different types of vegetation found in Brunei’s forests, and briefed them on their properties.
