Keep beaches clean so the public and future generations can enjoy its beauty in safety, urged the Malaysian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Dato’ Raja Reza bin Raja Zaib Shah during a cleaning campaign at Muara Beach yesterday. “There are people who do not pay attention to the cleanliness of the beach and leave garbage everywhere, including the sea, which washes back up on the beach,” said the high commissioner. “A clean beach will certainly be the focus for recreation and picnics, and as well as an attraction for anglers and visitors who want to enjoy the beautiful scenery, especially during sunset,” he said. World Oceans Day is observed on June 8 each year, with the aim of celebrating the world’s shared ocean, raising awareness on the crucial role the ocean plays in people’s lives, as well as the important ways people can help protect it. The climate crisis is very much an ocean crisis, Public Affairs Officer at the United States (US) Embassy in Brunei Darussalam Jeffrey Barrus said. The US is committed to championing ambitious global targets for ocean conservation, including conserving or protecting at least 30 per cent of the global ocean by 2030, he said. In conjunction with World Book Day, Green Brunei is collaborating with Bruneians:Read to organise a Book Fundraising Campaign which will be held throughout the month of March, from 4th March 2022 until 30th March 2022.  The campaign will be raising money through the selling of the books and sticker packs. 100 percent of proceeds will be donated to Lucky Calico, an organisation that promotes the safety of stray animals and as well as sharing knowledge regarding animal care. The funds will help in ensuring the welfare of stray animals.  The objectives of this book donation are to encourage the public to read, whilst to educate the public on mitigating the issue of strays.
