Be economical in power, water usage: Green Brunei

Green Brunei News
BRUNEIANS should use electricity and water economically and efficiently at home to reduce their monthly utility bills instead of waiting for the government to raise rates or cut subsidies to control energy and water consumption, said a leader of an environmental NGO. Green Brunei’s community engagement director, Khairunnisa Ash’ari(pic), said choosing energy saving and even solar-powered technology can help mitigate the effects of climate change. “Choosing (these alternatives) always begins with small steps that lead to waves of action. Remember that climate change is a cross-boundary issue, so we need everyone to contribute solutions,” she said. Speaking to The Brunei Times, Khairunnisa said more efforts should put in to reduce wastage in the country. “Lights and air-conditioning left on when there’s no one in the room is a common habit…

‘Public need to be more involved in climate change issue’

Green Brunei News
THERE needs to be consultation with the public on how to address climate change and its impacts on Brunei, apart from having discussions at the policy level, said the head of Green Brunei yesterday. The environmental NGO’s community engagement director, Khairunnisa Ash’ari, said it’s challenging for Green Brunei to raise awareness about climate change because most people here don’t feel that it impacts them. “In truth, it does affect us. Increases in global temperatures are impacting weather patterns, increasing heat waves, leading to bush fires and all this haze we’ve been suffering from, and more flash floods in areas that were previously unaffected are taking place,” she said. Brunei has been experiencing hazy conditions with forest fires continuing to affect the country, while heavy rains in December caused flash flooding…

Building the case for climate action

Green Brunei News
AS THE world celebrated Earth Hour on March 19, it was a great reminder how far we have come in creating awareness on the effects of climate change. It is not about turning off the lights for an hour, instead a call for humanity to contribute towards climate change within their own power and capacity. From rising sea levels to increasing global temperature, the climate crisis has resulted in many tragedies around the world. These include Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, which was the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded, killing over 6,000 people in The Philippines. Just last year, Iran reported a deadly heat index of 73 degrees celcius. The impact of climate change is beyond human tragedies in affected areas; destruction of crops and climate migration can also have an…

Raising eco awareness through waste recycling and management

Green Brunei News
THIS is with reference to the report “Raising eco awareness by turning waste into art” published in The Brunei Times (March 2, 2016). It is laudable that the environmental activist group, Green Brunei, will be organising a Waste 2 Art Exhibition to inculcate and promote recycling and waste management among growing and impressionable children. In this age of global warming and fast depleting natural resources, environmental awareness and ecological protection activities like this would certainly go a long way in safeguarding nature, whose well-being is crucial for our existence and survival. As it has been rightly pointed out that there is a need for non-governmental organisations and environmental activist groups to liaise with the corporate sector and government agencies in chalking out concerted environmental awareness and educational programmes, involving school…
