Over 316kg of trash collected at Serasa Beach

Kickstarting our 8 weeks 8 beach clean up movement #PantaiKuBersih yesterday. The beach cleanup movement is organised by Green Brunei interns. It is also supported by Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), Ministry of Development. Nearly 50 volunteers from University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD) lend their hands to clean up the first beach, Serasa Beach. A total of 316 kilograms of trash were collected within an hour of cleanup. The trash collected comprised of 70 kilograms of plastic bottles, 128 kilograms of general plastic (cutleries, detergent bottles, candy wrappers, etc.) and 118 kilograms of other waste such as soda-cans, glass, paper food packaging, and many others. The Green Protocol initiative aims to help promote sustainable living in an effort to reduce the country’s carbon footprint, said Academic Manager of Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Sultan Bolkiah Campus (SBC) Mohd Zainor bin Haji Zainal. “This year, IBTE Sultan Bolkiah Campus was able to work together with Green Brunei and Mitsubishi Corporation to conduct a tree-planting campaign across the campus. 15 youths aged 13-17 planted fruit saplings as part of the Global Awareness and Impact Alliance’s (GAIA) monthly Youth Series programme at Kebun Tang Salangan in Kampong Tungku yesterday. The event’s goal was to raise awareness on climate change and the importance of maintaining a healthy environment for future generations. The Youth Series programme, designed by GAIA, aims to equip youth with skill sets to build resilience and self-determination for a stable future with different lessons taught through GAIA’s monthly activities. The High Commission of India organised a tree planting event atBerakas Beach on 12 January 2022 to celebrate the National Youth Day of India as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. Green Brunei, in collaboration with Mitsubishi Corporation, initiated a 'Stay-at-home Tree Planting' campaign with the goal of planting 1,590 saplings by volunteers throughout November. The campaign is supported by the Brunei Darussalam Climate Change Secretariat, Forestry Department, Youth and Sports Department and the Brunei Youth Council. A total of 685 saplings consisting of Syzgium Oleina and also several types of fruit trees were distributed to the public through a drive-through method at the Anggerek Desa Swimming Pool, Tutong Youth Centre and Green Depot in Kuala Belait from November 1-6. Bangladesh High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Nahida Rahman Shumona received 10 fruit tree and 10 ornamental tree saplings from Legislative Council member and co-founder of Green Brunei Yang Berhormat Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari to support the Stay at Home Tree Planting Project.
