Over 800 join forces to clean up beaches

|   Syazwani Hj Rosli   | MORE than 800 volunteers joined forces yesterday morning for the annual ‘Brunei Coastal Clean-up’ campaign organised by the BSJV companies. At the Muara Beach, volunteers managed to collect 360.7 kilogrammes of garbage, while Jerudong Beach clean-up resulted in the collection of a total of 3,767.68 kilogrammes of rubbish. In Danau Beach, volunteers were successful in collecting 554 kilogrammes of trash, Lumut Beach saw the collection of 898.915 kilogrammes of trash and Panaga Beach volunteers collected a total of 325 kilogrammes of garbage. At the Jerudong Beach, a total of 221 volunteers alongside the organisers lent a helping hand in cleaning the beach areas during the campaing yesterday. The ‘Initiate Week – Rising of Social Entrepreneurs’ is a project started by Goh Chai Li, a lecturer from the School of Business, Politeknik Brunei (PB), under the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI). One of the aims of the programme was to ignite the spirit of social entrepreneurship among youths, as well as creating jobs and self-reliance, while at the same time raising public awareness and engaging people with activities that serve the community better. MORE than 20 staff members of Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) collaborated with Green Brunei to plant 100 trees and conduct a clean-up of the Berakas Forest Reserve yesterday, as part of their efforts in raising awareness on environmental conservation. Present at the event were YB Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari, a member of the Legislative Council, who is also a Co-Founder and a Community Engagement Director of Green Brunei; and Noralinda binti Haji Ibrahim, the Acting Director of the Forestry Department. THE fourth Green Leaders Camp (GLC4) concluded yesterday with a closing ceremony at the Youth Centre and a presentation of certificates to the participants by Haji Mohammad Zamree bin Haji Zunaidi, the Director of the Tourism Development Department at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism. ENVIRONMENTAL non-government organisation Green Brunei said more action is needed by the community in taking on their own initiatives in tackling climate change issues.
