Green project looks to plant 1,590 saplings

Green Brunei, in collaboration with Mitsubishi Corporation, initiated a ‘Stay-at-home Tree Planting’ campaign with the goal of planting 1,590 saplings by volunteers throughout November.

The campaign is supported by the Brunei Darussalam Climate Change Secretariat, Forestry Department, Youth and Sports Department and the Brunei Youth Council.

A total of 685 saplings consisting of Syzgium Oleina and also several types of fruit trees were distributed to the public through a drive-through method at the Anggerek Desa Swimming Pool, Tutong Youth Centre and Green Depot in Kuala Belait from November 1-6.

Volunteers for tree planting activities comprise students from primary schools to higher learning institutions, differently-abled youth as well as various individuals from the government, private sector and the public.

The activity is also supporting the Day of Action Campaign organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Khairunissa binti Haji Ash’ari who is also the co-Founder of Green Brunei, said the sapling distribution will continue in the coming dates where the public, especially students are encouraged to participate.

The campaign is one of the activities organised under the Environmental Education Tour Project to raise public awareness on climate change issues.

The project also supports four of the strategies under the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy. Apart from tree planting activities, the project will also involve a virtual tour to Tenaga Suria Brunei and Seria Energy Lab.

Several competitions for students will also be organised by the Ministry of Education under the theme ‘Climate Change’.
