Over 328 kilogrammes of trash, comprising plastic bottles, lighters, fishing nets, food wrappers and cigarette butts, were collected duing a beach clean-up along Lumut Beach, Belait Distrct yesterday.
Over 53 trash bags of waste were collected by 54 volunteers, were later disposed by the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), Ministry of Development.
Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari attended the clean-up, accompanied by Oiltown Safety Committee members, as well as students and volunteers from different institutions.
Organised by Green Depot – a project by Green Brunei based in Kuala Belait, which provides a platform to promote better waste management in the district by encouraging the public to recycle in exchange for cash through a savings concept – the campaign aimed to raise awareness on the importance of environmental cleanliness and the effect of littering on the ecosystem.
The campaign also highlighted collecting and ensuring unwanted materials are properly disposed play a key role in keeping and improving the coastal and ocean environment as well as safe-guarding marine life.
