In a concerted effort to promote eco-tourism and celebrate the essence of World Tourism Day, Green Brunei, in collaboration with the Tourism Development Department under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, orchestrated three captivating and immersive tourism excursions. These trips not only fostered an appreciation for Brunei’s natural beauty but also provided participants with an authentic glimpse into the country’s cultural tapestry.
Kicking off the series of events was the much-anticipated ‘Mangrove River Tour’ on the 7th of October. Participants were transported to the scenic Kampong Sungai Bunga, where they embarked on a tranquil river cruise, unravelling the captivating history and cultural heritage of Kampong Ayer. As the tour unfolded, the vibrant wildlife that thrives along the Brunei Bay captivated the attention of all on board. The highlight of the wildlife sightings was the elusive Proboscis Monkey, a cherished sight for travellers and a poignant reminder of the need for conservation efforts.
The excursion proved to be a bonding opportunity for families, with parents and children cherishing the close proximity to nature and each other. Striking conversations and camaraderie flourished among strangers, united by their shared excitement in exploring the enchanting wilderness. Of particular interest was the deep fascination with the endangered Proboscis Monkey, whose sightings filled the air with an aura of wonder and concern for its preservation.
The serene river cruise culminated in a visit to Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery, located near Jetty 1 and conveniently accessible by water taxi by the Royal Wharf. The gallery served as a treasure trove of information, unveiling the rich tapestry of the ‘Venice of the East’ and its time-honoured legacy. Participants were immersed in the vibrant social fabric that once thrived in the Kampong, while also admiring the intricate handicraft passed down through generations. An intriguing highlight was the sunken gallery, hosting an informative exhibition of traditional games, further enriching the participants’ understanding and fostering a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance of Kampong Ayer.
The trip not only provided an unforgettable experience for the participants but also underscored Brunei’s commitment to sustainable tourism and conservation. By celebrating the country’s natural heritage and cultural richness, Green Brunei and the Tourism Development Department have paved the way for a more profound understanding of the importance of preserving Brunei’s ecological wonders and historical legacies for generations to come.
