In a remarkable display of community solidarity and environmental consciousness, Green Brunei collaborated with Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd, and organized a successful beach cleanup at Sungai Liang Beach on 1 September 2023. Huge gratitude to our Guest Of Honour Haji Mohamad Yamin bin Haji Abdul Ranni, Penghulu Mukim Liang and our 200 enthusiastic participants consisiting of Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd staff, Liang Village Consultative Council and schools from PTE Tutong, PTE Belait and Politeknik Lumut Campus. This joint made a significant impact on the cleanliness and preservation of this pristine coastal area.
Sungai Liang Beach, a picturesque stretch of coastline along Brunei’s eastern shores, had been facing environmental challenges caused by the accumulation of plastic waste and litter. Green Brunei, a non-profit environmental organization committed to promoting sustainable practices and environmental awareness, took the initiative to address this issue head-on.
The breach cleanup kicked off at 7:30 AM with a brief introduction and safety instructions by Green Brunei’s co-founder, Miss Khairunnisa Ash’ari. Participants ranged from locals, high school students, and the public who were keen on making a positive contribution to the environment during their visit to Brunei.
Equipped with gloves, trash bags, and a collective determination to make a difference, participants fanned out across the beach, scouring the shoreline for litter. The effort was not only about cleaning up the area but also about raising awareness regarding the importance of reducing single-use plastics and the need for responsible waste disposal.
Throughout the event, participants discovered various items, including plastic bottles, food wrappers, fishing nets, and even some larger debris that had washed ashore. The collected waste was properly segregated and disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner, ensuring that recyclables were sent to recycling facilities and non-recyclables were appropriately handled.
Local businesses also joined hands with Green Brunei by providing refreshments and snacks for the participants, creating a sense of community and unity during the cleanup effort.
As the beach cleanup concluded, the beach had undergone a remarkable transformation. The sandy shores once marred by litter were now clean and inviting, showcasing the positive change that collective action can bring about.
Green Brunei plans to organize more community events in the future, aiming to inspire and engage even more individuals in the ongoing effort to protect Brunei’s environment.
