TUNGKU LINK, BRUNEI–MUARA: Over the years, Brunei has seen a steady increase in the number of non-government organisations (NGOs) led by youths in their efforts to instil a bigger awareness on the green aspects among the people in the country.
The Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday conducted a talk entitled ‘Advancing Brunei’s Green Frontier: A Youth-Led Approach’ at the UBD’s School of Business and Economics (UBD SBE) which was opened to students and lecturers at the university.
Present to give the talk was Dayang Khairunnisa Ash’ari, Founder and Community Engagement Director of Green Brunei, who highlighted that Brunei now has a number of NGOs that include the Brunei Nature Society, the Beach Bunch, Earth Hour Brunei team, Society for Community Outreach and Training (SCOT), Green Brunei, and BruWILD to protect the environment.
Khairunnisa said that Brunei’s energy consumption, has surpassed that in developing nations like Japan, France and Germany by at least 1,300 kilowatts per hour per person.
The Sultanate produces about 15.5 metric tonnes of Co2 per capita per year compared to the 7.1 metric tonnes per capita in Malaysia and 6.39 metric tonnes in Singapore – both more industrialised than Brunei.
The Green Brunei founder also noted that a Bruneian consumes 420 litres of water per person per day.
On average, a Bruneian produces 1.4kg per day, which means 189,000 tonnes of waste products produced every year by the country’s current population of 400,000, and this is projected to rise to 370,000 tonnes by 2030.
There have been initiatives carried out by the government, said Khairunnisa, such as the introduction of the electricity tariff system that rewards customers for using less electricity, building guidelines to reduce energy consumption, ‘No Plastic Bag Day’ campaign, and the Recycling 101 Handbook among many others. ©BRUDIRECT.COM
