On 19th February, Green Brunei members, Firdaus Ismail and Yasmin Jamal conducted an eco-awareness activity with year 7 and year 8 students of Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (Maktab Sains).
About 400 students started their morning with a warm up aerobic session conducted by a group of teachers before proceeding to the gymnasium for their session with Green Brunei.
The students were grouped according to their respective school houses ( Pahlawan, Panglima, Laksamana and Hulubalang ) before Firdaus Ismail led a brief talk on the 3R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle), mainly focusing on the importance of recycling. The aim was to raise awareness in the young minds on how pollution could easily affect the environment and to take initiative action for a greener lifestyle.
A group of ten students from each school houses volunteered to take part in a mini relay race styled activity. The four groups compete with each other to complete the different tasks that ranged from a three-legged race for tin cans to counting plastic bottles at four checkpoints within the gymnasium. The group of students finished the race with a mad dash to the centre to collect as many recyclable materials for their respective school houses.
The recyclable materials collected by the students during the activity was used to add on to their school houses’ recycling collection drive that was held on the school compound that morning. Points are awarded to each house based on the recycled items collected, their slogan and their organising skills. The total weigh in from all the school houses combined was an astonishing 4922 kg of recycled paper, 537 kg of scrap metal, 350 kg of plastic bottles and 114kg of tin cans.
After further judging made by the teachers, the house that won the first place in the recycling drive was Hulubalang.
