IN its bid to raise awareness and take action towards preserving the environment and ensuring the sustainability of the nation’s natural resources, Green Brunei will be organising its third Green Leaders Camp from September 20-23.
Project Manager, Muhd Firdaus Hj Ismail was calling for youth participation throughout the sultanate to be part of the climate change movement.
Themed “Protecting Marine Ecosystem’, the youth camp will focus on training of youth leaders and youth mobilisation, through the exposure of issues and environmental initiatives led by NGOs in the country. The camp aims to empower participants through a variety of workshops such as volunteerism, leadership, and many others.
“We will be inviting speakers from local youth-led NGOs and an organisation from The Philippines called ‘The Climate Change Project’. The workshop sessions would be very hands-on and I’m sure the participants would be looking forward for the turtle workshop,” said Firdaus.
Firdaus previously attended the International Workshop on Youth Action on Climate Change in Malaysia and has initiated the Green Leaders Camp twice under Green Brunei.
“The second Green Leaders Camp was for pre-universities and Green Brunei received satisfactory outcome. As a result, we have four projects lined up which will be conducted by the alumni after their A-level examinations,” he noted.
Through discussions and activities, the participants are hoped to be able to critically assess the environmental problems facing the country and come up with possible solutions that they can engage in as youth leaders.
Participants will also engage with different stakeholders such as the Heart of Borneo Centre, Tourism Department and Wildlife Division.
They will also undergo capacity building trainings to enable them to take action in their efforts towards preserving the environment and ensuring the sustainability of our natural resources.
At the end of the camp, participants are to have a better understanding about many environmental issues and challenges faced in the country, apart from developing a strong interest in taking part in environmental activities and in executing their follow-up projects.
Topics covered in the programme will include but not limited to Marine Ecology, Biodiversity, Sustainable Seafood, Conservation and more.
Registrations are limited to 40 participants only, aged between 17 and 25 years old. Interested youth can register on Green Brunei’s website at www.green-brunei.com and the registration fee is $25 per person or $100 per team of four members.
Fee includes meals, insurance, certificate and other incentives.
