New group to spread green message

A NEW environmental movement dubbed the Nature’s Avengers, under the Green Brunei organisation, hosted its first project for some 30 primary pupils from three schools in educating them on the blessings of nature, biodiversity and eco-system of the rainforest, at Bintudoh Greenspring Resort, Tutong.

The new group’s mission includes engaging with the environment hands-on to impact the young by changing their attitudes. The group was an initiative, led by Dk Hanna Afiqah Pg Hassanal Ali Saifuddien, a Green Brunei Student Ambassador and Project Coordinator.

Hanna was introduced to the resort through networks at the Bandar Seri Begawan Youth Centre that supported the movement. The project is also supported by the Youth and Sports Deparment, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), and Aswad Aroma Plantation and Kumatra Company in a bid to educate young people on the importance of sustainability of habitats in the jungles of Heart of Borneo.

Established early this year, the 12-man team — consisting of youths ranging from 18 to 22 years old, with varying backgronds from A-level to schoolteacher as well as other occupations — aims to promote green awareness through educating children.

The project is also a platform for pupils with potential to be given the opportunity to explore and interact with natural habitats. The one-day exploration project set up at the resort hosted activities for pupils to interact with the natural environment including the planting of Gaharu (Agarwood) trees, releasing fish into ponds and hands-on experience with tortoises in their hatcheries.

The primary children did not only engage with the environment, but also among themselves. They were taught by the Nature’s Avengers team to interact with one and another and become more proactive individuals.

“We have lined up a number of activities, so that young people get engaged with nature . These projects are made for young people, which is in line with the theme of MCYS ,” said Hanna.

Meanwhile, Nadzirah Hanani Muhammad Nazri Azlan and Muhd Fadli Hj Zaini, key members of the Nature’s Avengers said, “We are the youngest youth-initiated-project, and the most various of members who were spontaneously put together due to our like-mindedness. We administer as much knowledge we can to teach the young.”
