A CLEANING campaign was launched yesterday during the unveiling of Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty’s Accession to the Throne.
According to municipal officer Sheran bin Haji Shari, also head of the cleanliness section of the event’s sectoral committee, the campaign is a collaborative project carried between the Municipal Board of Bandar Seri Begawan; Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe); private companies such as ISS Facility Services Sdn Bhd and Borneo United Enterprise Sdn Bhd; and volunteers from various organisations.
“We worked in shifts on Saturday and earlier yesterday where we collected litter and rubbish around the area and maintained the cleanliness of the area throughout and after the event. Overall, 600 staff and 407 volunteers worked throughout the event during the campaign,” Sheran said.
He also appealed for members of the public to always be responsible in maintaining the cleanliness of the capital during the event and make use of the hundreds of designated bins provided in the areas.
Meanwhile, Haji Muhammad Alamul Huda bin Dato Paduka Haji Adnan, a landscape architect at JASTRe, shared in an interview that JASTRe and several other companies had provided over 200 dustbins and recycling bins throughout the area of the new park.
“We strive to ensure that the ecosystem is always clean and at the same time raise public awareness on the importance of ensuring cleanliness in all public areas in the country,” he stressed. “To make the country clean is actually an easy matter but it requires an individual mindset of keeping the country clean.”
The volunteer team comprised members of Green Brunei, Politeknik Brunei, Eco Enzyme and Ibadurrahman Youth Group, Tutong.
Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas, an eco-corridor project that commenced in January last year, was spearheaded by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and spans 1.2km along the Sungai Kedayan river mouth near a trio of the city’s most famous landmarks: the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Istana Darussalam and the Edinburgh Bridge.
The project is also part of the Bandar Seri Begawan Masterplan which aims to improve socio-economic conditions via the provision of green recreational spaces to promote a quality and healthy lifestyle, in addition to attracting more tourists and foreign investment into the country.
