TWO Bruneians were awarded the Chevening Scholarship for the 2016-2017 session in a reception held yesterday at the residence of the British High Commissioner to Brunei.
The recipients are Azizul Azri Hj Majit, an Administrative Officer 1st Grade at the Youth and Sports Department who will be pursuing an MSc in Sustainability and Management at Royal Holloway, University of London and Khairunissa Ash’ari, Co-Founder and Community Engagement Director at Green Brunei will be pursuing an MA in Environment, Politics and Globalisation at King’s College London.
During the event, British High Commissioner to Brunei David Campbell said that he was pleased to present scholarships to the two recipients and represents a bond of friendship between the two countries.
“These subjects are of global importance and to Brunei and I’m sure that each of our scholars will find the experience of studying very useful when they return to Brunei and provide a lasting contribution to the country,” said the high commissioner.
During an interview, Azizul Azri Hj Majit said he was interested in learning and contributing towards social and economical sustainability in Brunei.
“I’m trying to look at our policy in the governance especially in how sustainable those policies can be such as policies which contributes to youth economic development in the country especially their participation in entrepreneurship programmes which I believe the course can (provide me that knowledge),” said Azizul.
Meanwhile, Khairunissa Ash’ari said during an interview that she took the scholarship as it directly relates with her work in Green Brunei and would equip her with the knowledge to become more effective towards environmental protection.
“My course covers politics and that is one of the angles that I really would like to explore more because I want to see how strongly I can advocate for issues and policies here in Brunei. At the same time one of my courses will be environmental internship so it would be a good way for me to observe how NGOs are run in other countries and take back some of the knowledge and resources that I can apply in Brunei,” she added.
According to a press statement, the Chevening Scholarships is currently open to citizens and permanent residents of Brunei Darussalam.
Ideal candidates are those in early to mid career with at least two years work experience and record of achievements showing leadership qualities.

The Chevening Scholarship scheme is the UK Government’s flagship scholarship programme is offered to over 150 countries and attracts around 2,300 scholars every year from all over the world.
The scheme aims to provide postgraduate students and young professionals from Brunei Darussalam with high potential, an opportunity to develop their academic and management skills at British Universities.
