THE Green Brunei Eco Drive yesterday crowned Jerudong International School (JIS) as the winner of its four-month recycling initiative.
JIS collected over six tonnes of recyclables in the competition, surpassing Mahad Islam Brunei’s two tonnes of recyclables and Jerudong Primary School’s 1.8 tonnes of recyclables.
Meanwhile, Sayyidina Hasan Secondary School received the consolation prize for raising 1.4 tonnes of recyclables.
An awards ceremony was held at the Sayyidina Hasan Secondary School, where the winners were announced in front of government officials and supporting partners.
“We hope that the students will continue to practise recycling in their schools and their homes as waste management has always been a lingering issue that is yet to be solved,” said Khairunnisa Ash’ari, co-founder and community engagement director of Green Brunei.
She also hoped the recycling campaign will help to create and promote environmental awareness in the wider community.
A total of 22 schools participated in the Green Brunei Eco Drive this year, collecting over 12 tonnes of recyclables altogether. It was the second recycling initiative conducted by the NGO after it was launched in 2014.
The recycling campaign aimed to engage students, teachers and parents nationwide in raising environmental awareness with a focus on waste management and recycling.
In addition to recognising the recycling efforts of the winning schools, the awards ceremony also saw the presentation of certificates to Sinaran Mas School, Jerudong Primary School and Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College for contributing books to the Green Brunei Eco Drive.
The books will be handed over to the Singapore-Brunei Youth Leadership Exchange Programme Alumni for their ‘Read or Take It’ campaign.
Green Brunei organised the recycling initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Development’s Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) and the Ministry of Education’s Science, Technology and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre.
It was supported by Telekom Brunei Berhad, Netcom Computer House, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam and Azutech Sdn Bhd.
