FOUR students from Sayyidina Ali Secondary School (SMSA) participated in a national consultation to discuss climate change issues within the country with other youths from various environmental organisations.
It was the first time the pre-university students – Abdul Muqsit Hj Jafari, Asila Hanum Hj Ahad, Muhd Zulqarnain Hj Zulaihi and Nur Hanis Nazihah Ideris – participated in such discussion, where they shared their insights and ideas on the matter.
According to Abdul Muqsit, it was an interesting discussion with 16 other youth representatives from different environmental groups in Brunei, which gave them a valuable learning experience and golden opportunity for those unfamiliar with the issue.
“We hope what has been discussed will help solve the issue, not only locally but internationally,” he said.
As the `other participants are on a higher education level, Muhd Zulqarnain initially felt a little intimidated, but was glad to have contributed ideas.
Nur Hanis Nazihah also commented that it was a relief to know that her opinions are accounted despite being a sixth form student.
“I did not feel left out and was encouraged to speak out and contribute my ideas,” she said.
Former green leadership camper, Asila Hanum said that she was honoured to have partaken in the discussion with experienced individuals in the field.
The event was organised by Green Brunei – a non-profit organisation which promoted environmental education and conservation – and supported by Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe).
The discussion aims to come up with a position paper on climate change and to collect ideas and opinions, which will be forwarded in the ASEAN Power Shift held in Singapore from July 24 to 26.
